Every year, around four in the morning on Karwa Chauth, my mother-in-law’s kitchen light would come on before anyone else’s in the lane. Pheniyan in milk, a few almonds, a glass of coconut water, and the same line every time: “Kha le, phir pura din yaad aayega.” Eat now, you’ll remember it all day.
She was right. Karwa Chauth is a long day. But it’s also one of the most loved days in a North Indian woman’s calendar, full of mehndi, red bangles, shared stories and a quiet wait for the moon.
Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. Here is everything you need: the exact muhurat, the moonrise time for your city, what to eat in sargi, the puja vidhi, the katha, and answers to the questions women actually search for every year.

| Fast duration | 6:31 AM to about 8:17 PM |
| Puja muhurat | 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM |

Panchangs differ by a few minutes on moonrise, so if your app shows 8:12 PM, don’t worry. Keep watching the eastern sky from about 8:05 PM.
This question comes up every year. In India, the Chaturthi tithi begins after midnight and stays through the day and the moonrise on 29 October, so the vrat is kept on Thursday, 29 October.
If you live in the USA or Canada, the tithi shifts with the time zone and the fast there is observed on Wednesday, 28 October. In the UK, check a local panchang.
The fast ends only after you see the moon, so this is the timing that matters most. Approximate moonrise on 29 October 2026:
| City | Moonrise (IST) |
| New Delhi | 8:17 PM |
| Noida | 8:11 PM |
| Gurugram | 8:13 PM |
| Kolkata | 7:47 PM |
| Chennai | 8:44 PM |
| Mumbai | 9:00 PM |
The general rule: the further east you are, the earlier the moon rises. In cities like Lucknow, Patna and Varanasi, expect it before Delhi; in Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Pune, a little later. Haze or cloud can delay the sighting by a few minutes even after moonrise.
The name has two parts. Karwa (or karva) is a small clay pot with a spout, used for water. Chauth means the fourth day, here the Chaturthi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, which falls about nine days before Diwali. In older texts the same vrat is called Karak Chaturthi.
Married women keep a nirjala fast, without food or water, from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the health and long life of their husbands. The festival is strongest in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, but today it is kept across India and by Indian families abroad.
There are a few layers to why this vrat has lasted for centuries.
A prayer for the husband’s long life. This is the reason every woman knows. Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Kartikeya, Ganesha and the Moon are worshipped together for a long and healthy married life.
A friendship between women. One older explanation is less known but quite moving. Young brides in many communities married into villages far from their parents. On Karwa Chauth a bride would form a lifelong bond with another woman, a kangan saheli or dharam behan, who would be her support in the new home. The clay karwa exchanged between women was a symbol of that friendship.
A seasonal marker. The festival falls at the start of the rabi sowing season in the wheat belt of North India, when the karwa filled with wheat grains was also a prayer for a good harvest.
A test of discipline. In Indian tradition a vrat is not only about not eating. It is about steadiness of mind, which is why the day traditionally involves no sewing, no harsh words and plenty of prayer and rest.
Today many husbands keep the fast alongside their wives, and many women see it as a celebration of partnership rather than a one-sided ritual. Both readings are part of how the festival has grown.
Sargi is the pre-dawn meal, traditionally given to the daughter-in-law by her mother-in-law. Eat it before sunrise, which is 6:31 AM in Delhi; most families wake around 4 to 4:30 AM.
A good sargi keeps you steady through a long nirjala day:
Avoid very salty, fried or spicy food and too much tea or coffee in sargi. They make you thirstier during the day.
Keep these ready by the afternoon:
The most popular katha is the story of Queen Veeravati, the only sister of seven loving brothers. On her first Karwa Chauth at her parents’ home, she grew faint from hunger and thirst by evening. Unable to watch her suffer, the brothers lit a fire behind a tree and held a sieve in front of it, making it look like the moon had risen.
Veeravati broke her fast. Almost at once she received news that her husband had died. Heartbroken, she prayed to Goddess Parvati, who told her what had happened and asked her to keep the vrat with complete faith for a full year. She did, and on the next Karwa Chauth her husband’s life was restored.
The moral is simple: keep the vrat sincerely, and don’t break it before the real moon rises.
Other kathas linked to this day include Karwa, who saved her husband from a crocodile, and Savitri, who won back Satyavan’s life from Yamraj.
Small changes in the home can make the puja feel calmer and more focused:
Karwa Chauth is a full day without water, and that isn’t safe for everyone. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, have low blood pressure, kidney trouble or are on regular medication, speak to your doctor first. Many families today accept a phalahari or water-allowed version of the vrat in these cases, and the sankalp is no less sincere.
During the day, rest, avoid the sun, and skip heavy housework. When you break the fast, start with water and something light, not a heavy fried meal.
Red is the classic colour of suhaag, followed by maroon, pink, orange and gold. Since Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on a Thursday, the day of Brihaspati, yellow is also considered auspicious this year. Many women wear their wedding lehenga or saree on their first Karwa Chauth.
Traditionally, black and white are avoided on this day.

Karwa Chauth ki hardik shubhkamnayein.
