Top Vastu Mistakes Indians Make In Home Design – and How To Fix Them

Vastu – the word that everyone is well known for. Vastu is again on trend among people because many of them are aware of its positive and negative impact on life. They know the magical effects of vastu compliant space on life that helps in attracting abundance, happiness, financial growth, harmony in relationships and good health.

Vastu is an architectural science that applies while constructing or designing the living space in such a way which helps in attracting positive energies into space. Do you know vastu energy is aligned with the cosmic energy that works with the collaboration of planets and 5 elements? 5 elements – as our body is made of panchatatwa similarly our space is also a combination of panchatatwa. These energies help in the flow of positive energies in living space. In vastu each direction is influenced by different energies and planets.

Have you ever heard of Astro-Vastu?

Yes, Vastu works according to your birth chart. The placement of planets in your birth chart influences your life and Vastu of your house too.Today it is followed by many people but only few of them achieve the Vastu compliant home with the help of an expert’s advice. And rest of them apply vastu rules by influence through videos regarding vastu on instagram and facebook posted by different Vastu consultants. And this a big mistake which they do and the result is just opposite of their expectations. As different diseases have different solutions, similarly different people have different vastu problems. So how can a single video or reels solve them and especially without knowing their problems. Every person has their own birth chart and the influence of planets on them are in different ways. They require vastu solutions according to their problems. Vastu is a very deep science that can be done only by experts who have knowledge in depth and years of experience in this

field.

Lets know about the big mistakes that many people do in applying vastu rules without any knowledge:

Entrance : As we all know that everyone wants to decorate their entrance for positive vibration. People used to place idols, especially Lord Ganesha Idol at the entrance. But it is very inauspicious to place them at the entrance. The place of idols is mandir not at the entrance. You can place any auspicious symbols like OM, SWASTIK etc at the entrance for attracting positive energies. People place plants at the entrance but according to the vastu rules there isa particular zone to place plants to balance the energies. And it’s not necessary that your entrance is in that zone. And please don’t use artificial flowers or plants in decoration. Some people used to place fountains at the entrance and this is a big mistake that they make. If your entrance is in the North then it is auspicious otherwise it is inauspicious. Because North is the Zone of water element and fountain represents the water element. So place it according to the directions.

Mandir/Puja room: Now come to the place of placing idols. Today people have started using idols as decoration items. They place them in their show window to give the classy looks. But it is a big mistake they make. The place of idols is to be placed in mandir and also ensure NE direction of your space is the direction of placing mandir or planing puja room. If it is not possible it can also be placed in the East direction. Don’t keep multiple idols of a single god. And the height of idols must be 2-3 ft. Always curtain your mandir.

Washroom: One more mistake that most of the people do is they use to keep storage in the washroom. Washroom is the area of disposal and area from where negative energies enter. So , never use it as a store room. Keep the washroom neat and clean. Don’t clutter it, use fragrance, you can also use sea salt to purify the washroom area. Sea salt has energy to absorb negativity. But always keep it changing every 15 -20 days without touching it. Flowit in running water. You can also keep small plants to balance the energies.

Ceiling: It is the most common mistake that almost 80% of the population do that is uneven ceiling. To meet the designed decor they ignore these facts. Our ceiling must be plain, use the ceiling design but avoid the design having to be cut because sitting or sleeping under such ceiling may increase your health issues. Always keep the washroom door closed.

Bed/furniture: Another mistake that many people do is they prefer storage beds that totally touch the floor. But according to Vastu principle, the box bed is not compliant because it stops Geo-energy from reaching us due to storage in it while sleeping. We should always prefer a normal bed without a storage box, if you have a storage box then ensure there must be a leg under it or in any furniture items. It is helpful in the flow of energy and it also makes cleaning easier.

Mirrors: Today in many home decor items mirrors are used specially on walls designing. But do you know? There is also a specific direction of using or placing mirrors. Mirrors can be placed only in the North or East direction. One should always be careful while using the mirror in the bedroom. While sleeping our body should not reflect on the mirror, otherwise it will create many health issues.

Kitchen: Never go for an open kitchen, it is against vastu rules. But today many people use it to maketheir kitchen open. Always keep your kitchen clutter free and in an organized way. The kitchen must be in the SE direction as it is the zone of fire. Never aligned sink and cook top on a single slab. Keep all the storage towards the South of the kitchen.

There are so many rules that everyone should know while designing their home. The above are a few of them. If you want to avoid all these mistakes and design a vastu compliant home then take consultation from an expert.

Vastu for Beginners: Simple Room by Room Vastu Rules for Every Indian Home

Vastu is a science of aligning cosmic energies into our living space, whether it is office, home or factories. It is an architectural design that is based on ancient science. It holds many significance and insights. In other words vastu means aligning 5 elements of energy into our living space for positive energy flow. By aligning these energies into your living space you can fill your space with happiness and prosperity. But it will only be possible if you follow the principle of vastu in your living or working space.

The balancing of these 5 elements include everything like – decors, colours, furniture placement, allocation of rooms, washrooms, kitchen, puja room, ceiling, placement of water bodies, septic tank etc according to the directions.

Nowadays we consider many things while building the house for modifying the space but forget to follow the vastu guideline and it results in negative impact on financial growth, relationships, career etc. So it is crucial to follow these principles and it is possible by hiring an expert vastu consultant for your house.

Very few people know that vastu plays an important role according to your birth chart. Only few consultants will disclose this secret that vastu has different effects on different occupants which is based on the placements of the stars in their birth chart. Every individual has different favourable directions according to their birth chart. There are so many factors which every individual should consider while making house:

Entry of house: As per vastu guideline the first step is to select the positive direction for entry in a house or office that is favourable for you. The main door is the source of positive energy flow in the house and it is important to ensure the right direction according to vastu principles. It should be well lit and well decorated with plants. Don’t place a shoe stand at the entrance, If placed then go for the covered and well organized shoe rack. Place a name plate and place any auspicious sign at the entrance. Don’t place any frame of the idol at the entrance.

Kitchen: Kitchen is the engine of the house from where every individual gets energy as food to live a life. The favourable direction for the kitchen is the South East direction as it is the zone of fire. Always remember don’t keep the burner and the sink aligned in the same line, it may create conflict in the family because both elements are anti to each other. While cooking one should face towards the East and a water body like tap should be placed towards the North wall of the kitchen. Also ensure tap should never leak if so then repair it on an urgent basis, it will create financial loss. Always keep the kitchen clean and clutter free.

Mandir/Puja room: Ideal direction for mandir is NE. One should face towards the East while doing puja. There should be no idol of a single god more than 1. Never place a mandir in the balcony, if placed then cover the area and never close the door of the mandir completely, you can curtain it.

Bedroom: The most important area for the tenants is the bedroom which should be in the South or SW direction for stability in relation and place your bedhead towards the South or SW direction which will give you a nice sleep. There should be a source of natural light in the bedroom for positive energy flow. Don’t place the bedhead towards the North. There should be no cut or beam on the ceiling over the bed. There should be a solid wall at the back side of the bedhead. Window and glass doors are not suggested to be on the backside of the bed. Never place a mirror in the bedroom in such a direction from where it reflects the bed while sleeping. It may create health issues.

Washroom: Washroom is the area from where negative energies enter the living space. And it impacts on occupants’ lives. According to vastu rules an ideal direction for a washroom is the SSW, ESE and WNW direction in the house.  As per vastu principles these directions dispose off our anxiety, stress and negativity. It is believed that placing sea salt in the washroom absorbs all the negativity of the house. But you have to keep changing it every 15 days. Always keep the door of the washroom closed. The toilet seat platform should be a little higher than the rest of the area in the washroom. Keep your washroom fragrant. Also ensure that the washroom should not share the wall with the kitchen and mandir.

Furniture: Furniture is also an important factor in vastu. It should be of a regular shape like rectangular or square shape. Because irregular furniture creates confusion and always prefer the wooden furniture and place heavy furniture towards the SW or South direction of every room. To avoid having furniture touching the floor, there must be legs for flow of geothermal energy into space.

Color scheme: According to Vastu, each direction is influenced by different colors. So we should take care of colours while painting the house. You can choose a universal colour like off-white, creamy shades or beige colour while painting the house. But can prefer colours in other decor items according to the direction. Avoid using dark colours.

Photos/Clock/Mirror: Never place photos of alive family members in the South wall because it is the place for No More family members. Place family member photos on the North or East wall of any room. And same rules are for the clock and mirror

These are the key principles that can help you in creating a healthy and positive environment. To disclose all the secrets of vastu search an expert for your space and take benefit of their services.

Lohri 2026: Date, Exact Timings, Vastu Secrets, Rituals & Delhi-NCR Celebrations

Lohri 2026 will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 and marks one of the most auspicious harvest festivals of North India. Deeply rooted in Punjabi culture, Lohri symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, abundance after hard work, and gratitude towards nature. In Delhi-NCR, Lohri is celebrated with sacred bonfires, traditional folk songs, til-gud offerings, and Vastu-based rituals for prosperity and happiness.

The festival is observed one day before Makar Sankranti, when the Sun begins its northward journey (Uttarayan), making Lohri spiritually powerful for wealth, success, and new beginnings.

Lohri 2026 Exact Date & Timings (Delhi Panchang)

Lohri timings play an important role in performing rituals correctly. As per the Delhi Panchang, the most auspicious timings for Lohri 2026 are as follows:

  • Lohri Date: Tuesday, January 13, 2026

  • Lohri Bonfire Time: After sunset, around 6:45 PM

  • Makar Sankranti Moment: Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 2:24 PM

  • Punya Kaal: 7:15 AM – 9:00 AM (best time for til daan)

Performing Lohri rituals during these timings helps attract positivity, health, and long-term prosperity.

Why Lohri Is Celebrated – Spiritual & Cultural Significance

Lohri holds deep spiritual importance and honors Dulha Bhatti, a legendary folk hero who protected women and stood against injustice. Lighting the Lohri bonfire represents the burning of negativity, fear, and past obstacles.

Spiritually, the fire is dedicated to Agni Dev, who carries offerings of sesame seeds, jaggery, peanuts, and rewari to the divine forces. As the Sun transitions into Uttarayan, Lohri becomes a powerful occasion for manifesting abundance, harmony, and success in life.

Bonfire Vastu: 5 Power Positions for Maximum Prosperity

According to Vastu Shastra, the direction and placement of the Lohri bonfire significantly influence the results of the ritual. Below are the most powerful bonfire placements for Lohri 2026:

Direction Offerings Mantra 2026 Benefit
Northeast Til-gud, cotton Ganesh Atharvashirsha Career growth
East Sarson stalks Surya Gayatri Health boost
Southeast Jaggery laddoo Om Agniye Namah Wealth magnet
North Dry coconut Lakshmi Beej Mantra Family harmony

Important Rule:
Always face east while lighting the bonfire and chant “Om Agniye Namah” 108 times. Avoid a south-facing bonfire, as it may create Rahu-related imbalances.

Lohri Puja Vidhi – Complete Step-by-Step Ritual (45 Minutes)

Performing Lohri Puja with proper steps enhances the spiritual benefits of the festival. Follow this traditional Lohri Puja Vidhi:

  1. Sunset Sankalpa (6:45 PM): Take water in a copper lota, apply kumkum tilak on the forehead, and face the northeast direction while making a positive intention.

  2. Bonfire Preparation: Prepare a circular bonfire area using neem branches, sarson stalks, and cotton cloth.

  3. Parikrama Ritual: Walk 7 clockwise rounds around the bonfire holding til-gud prasad while chanting “Sundar Mundiye Ho.”

  4. Aarti Ceremony: Light 11 camphor diyas, sing Lohri folk songs, and wave flowers three times.

  5. Prasad Distribution: Distribute sarson da saag and makki di roti to at least 11 people and keep one portion for ancestors.

Ideal Timing:
Begin at moonrise (6:45 PM) and conclude the ritual by 8:30 PM for optimal planetary alignment.

  3. Drain excess water and grind into a smooth paste.

  4. Heat ghee in a heavy or copper vessel.

  5. Add garlic and sauté until golden.

  6. Add the ground paste and stir for 3–5 minutes.

  7. Simmer on low flame for about 4 hours, stirring occasionally.

Kartik Purnima is a day that holds many significance and is a very auspicious day which is celebrated as a festival. Kartik is one of the most sacred month in the whole year according to Hindu calendar. This Purnima holds the most significance among all Purnima and every single day of this month is highly auspicious. In 2025 it starts from 4 November at 10:37 pm and ends on 5th November at 06:50 pm. This day is auspicious for many activities like – prayers, rituals, fasting, donation and other spiritual activities. On this day devotees offer prayer to Lord Vishnu and observe fasting. This day is also marked as Dev Deepawali that is celebrated in the evening after sun sets. It means lighting diya in the holy river showing divine victory over darkness or negativity. People gathered in Ganga ghat in Varanasi to lit diya. Many people gathered here to light diya and after that Sandhya Aarti performed that made you feel or connect you directly to the divine energies. You can feel the presence of unseen energies on this day and the aura of that place is just like a heaven that purifies your inner soul and mind.

According to hindu mythology this full moon day signifies the Matsya Avtar, a divine form of Lord Vishnu. He rescued humanity and vedas. And it is also recognized as the victory of Lord Shiva over Tripurasura. Because of this Purnima is also known as Tripuri Purnima.

Gods were totally helpless in front of Mahishasur, then they went to Lord Brahma and asked for the solution.
