Kartik Purnima is a day that holds many significance and is a very auspicious day which is celebrated as a festival. Kartik is one of the most sacred month in the whole year according to Hindu calendar. This Purnima holds the most significance among all Purnima and every single day of this month is highly auspicious. These whole months provide an opportunity to seek blessings and connect themselves to the divine powers.
In 2025 it starts from 4 November at 10:37 pm and ends on 5th November at 06:50 pm. This day is auspicious for many activities like – prayers, rituals, fasting, donation and other spiritual activities. On this day devotees offer prayer to Lord Vishnu and observe fasting. This day is also marked as Dev Deepawali that is celebrated in the evening after sun sets. It means lighting diya in the holy river showing divine victory over darkness or negativity. People gathered in Ganga ghat in Varanasi to lit diya. Many people gathered here to light diya and after that Sandhya Aarti performed that made you feel or connect you directly to the divine energies. You can feel the presence of unseen energies on this day and the aura of that place is just like a heaven that purifies your inner soul and mind.
According to hindu mythology this full moon day signifies the Matsya Avtar, a divine form of Lord Vishnu. He rescued humanity and vedas. And it is also recognized as the victory of Lord Shiva over Tripurasura. Because of this Purnima is also known as Tripuri Purnima.
Some rituals of Kartik Purnima:
- Perform morning and evening puja of Lord Vishnu to seek blessings or attend the mangala aarti in the temple.
- Prepare sattvik offerings, decorate your home and perform kirtan with family at home.
- On this day visiting Kartikeye mandir is very auspicious and offers fresh flowers, fruits and light diya.
- As observing fast on Monday of Shravan month is auspicious, similarly observing fasting on Monday of Kartik month is also very auspicious. People follow different rituals according to the rituals followed by their locality and family.
- The rituals of different states are different to each other as in the Southern part of India, it is celebrated as Skanda Sashti.
Vidhi of performing puja:
- Wake up early in the morning, before brahma muhurat, take holy bath and clean the home. Make rangoli with rice flour at the entrance or can use rangoli colour but rice flour or its paste is believed to be very auspicious. Decorate your house and mandir with fresh flowers, sprinkle Ganga jal all over the house to purify. Keep a Kumbha (small pot) filled with water at the entrance.
- Light up earthen diya with sesame oil or ghee to reduce the darkness and finish the negativity. Deep daan is also believed to remove financial obstacles from life. In it 365 ghee lamps are lighted that symbolizes offering divine light for each day of the year.
- Perform kirtan with chanting:
– HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA, KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE, HARE RAMA HARE RAMA, RAMA RAMA HARE HARE.
– OM NAMO BHAGVATE VASUDEVAYA

- Offer sattvic food which includes – fresh fruits, some made sweets, kheer and other prasadam. Distribute Prasad among others after offering.
- Tulsi Vivah also falls on Ekadashi of Kartik month. It is the remembrance day of Devi Tulsi vivah with Lord Vishnu on this day. Worshipping Tulsi ji on this day is believed to bring happiness and fortune.
- Donation on this is considered very auspicious on this day. Anna Daan is considered as Maha Daan in Hindu mythology. Offering food, clothes and other essentials to needy people, Brahmins and animals is very auspicious on this day. Many people consider doing Gau-Seva on this day. Such selfless practice attracts multiple blessings and good karma.
- Observing fast and reading Satyanarayan Katha or Akhand Bhajan whole night is also an effective way to seek blessings and invite happiness in life.
- In Odisha one more practice is performed by people. They make a miniature boat by paper or some other crafting material. Place a diya in it and float them in the water bodies for symbolizing prayer for safe journey and prosperity. And people used to visit as much as they could to the different temples.

- Jainism observe this day as Lord Mahavira’s final Sermon
