Diwali is the festival of lights, a sound of crackers and lightning all over the universe with a glimpse of happiness and joy among all. This festival is celebrated across India in many different ways as India has people who belong to different religions. And every religion holds their own ways and rituals to celebrate it. As it is the festival of lights, children are very excited on this day. It is celebrated in the month of kartik on Amavasya to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

But there is a history behind celebrating Diwali.  According to Hindu Mythology it is said that on this day Lord Rama returned Ayodhya with Mata Sita and Laxman after defeating Ravana. Ravana had kidnapped Mata Sita while they were on Vanvash to take revenge for his sister Surpnakha’s nose cut by Lord Rama. Ravana is unaware of the truth that Mata Sita was his own daughter. To whom he ordered to get buried in land after prediction of astrologer that she will be the reason for Ravana’s destruction. Then Raja Janak got her while ploughing his land and raised her as his own daughter. It is well said that everything is planned before you enter into the universe. She is the only reason for Ravana’s destruction.

On this day we celebrate with puja of Goddess Laxmi ji and Lord Ganesh ji. Laxmi ji is the Goddess of abundance and Ganesh ji who shows path to overcome obstacles. We can feel their presence on this day. On this, people purchase new vehicles, property, jewelleries etc. It is believed that by purchasing new things on this day we are inviting abundance and prosperity to our home.

People use to do lots of things in this puja:

  • People started cleaning their home before 1 month, throwing all the useless clutter items from home. Mostly people paint their home and repair all the defective items.
  • People used to purchase new things on this day. It includes – new electronic items, house, car and many more.
  • We decorate our house with flowers, rangoli, different decorative items, toran, bandhanwar, different types of lighting, candles, lamps etc.
  • Different types of sweets and other dishes are made on this day. Something special that marks this day as Diwali.
  • On Diwali we use to give sweets or any gift items in offices, neighbours, relatives, friends etc. Many people distribute the household thing to needy persons or give donation to orphanage
  • There are special rituals that are followed while doing puja as suggested by pandit ji or elderly people at home. Then all the family gathered and did arti.
  • All people celebrate it with great joy. The sound of crackers creates an aura of victory across the world in the welcome of Lord Rama. And lightning diya, candle, light a sky lantern etc add a glimpse of positivity in the whole universe.

It is believed that the Goddess enters the home at the time of Diwali and stays there for the whole year. Goddess Laxmi is the symbol of purity and abundance. Ganesh ji is the symbol of stability. You should purify your soul before invoking them because they only listen to the pure heart. And you can feel their presence on Diwali.

Significance of Pitru Paksh

As we all know if we lose the person whom we love a lot and it is very difficult to accept their death or to believe that the person is no more. Sometime after death also we feel their presence just because we are connected to them through the love and affection we still have for them. It comes in the month of September or October. According to Indian culture it is believed that the family members who are no more were still alive in some other world. And after descending from earth we perform these rituals that help them to rest in peace and get freedom from this world.

In our home it is said by our grandparents that the pind daan during pitru paksh acts as a food for the ancestors for the whole year.

There are many stories related to our ancestors, it is believed since ancient times. One of the stories is related to “Mahabharata”. As we all know ‘Karna’ the son of Kunti (mother of panch pandavas) and Karna is gifted by Lord Sun for her devotion to him. It is said that after death Karna is sent to Swarga. He is offered gold and gemstone to eat instead of food. Karna was in doubt why they are offering these items as food. He went to Lord Indra and asked the reason for all of the incident. Indra dev answered that before death he had donated gold stones to needy persons but never offered food to his ancestors. So how he could be offered food. It is true that karma returns what we will do in our lifetime; everything will come back to us in the same way.  Karna realised his mistakes and requested Indra dev to send him back to the earth for 15 days to perform the ritual of shradha. These 15 days are known as “Pitru Paksha”. It shows the importance of offering food to the departed soul.

There are some key rituals that are followed during

Pitru paksha that are passed from generation to generation and these rituals are symbolic expression of gratitude and responsibilities toward our ancestors:

  • Shradha: This is the basic rituals followed by family members by offering foods which include kheer, lentils, puri, vegetables to Brahmins and cows. Sradha is performed on tithi on which the ancestors leave this world.
  • Tarpan: Tarpan means Kusha grass tying in finger to offer water mixed with barley and sesame seeds while chanting mantras by Pandit ji. It is mostly done by river banks or sacred water bodies because it is believed that it quenches the thirst of the ancestors.
  • Pind Daan: In this cooked barley and rice balls known as pindas are offered to ancestors. This pind daan help ancestors to be detached from this world and help their soul to rest in peace.
  • Daan: This is a powerful ritual. Anna Daan is considered a very powerful spiritual act.
  • Feeding the needy persons: Nowadays families use to donate food in NGOs to provide meals to the underprivileged with feelings of love.

These are some of the rituals that are performed during this period. As our country is a home of different religions. There are different rules and ways of performing these rituals for the ancestors.

As we all know India is a country of different religions, cultures and festivals. And we have celebrated each and every festival with great joy since ancient times. There are many significance and history behind every festival. Navaratri is one of them. It comes after Pitru Paksha when Shukla paksha starts. According to hindu mythology, Maa Durga fought with demon Mahishashur for nine days and defeated him on the 10th day. This festival is devoted to Goddess Durga for nine days and celebrates the victory over the demon by Maa Durga as Vijayadashami or Dusshera. And this victory shows the triumph of righteousness over demon or evil. In these nine days we worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Let’s know about all of these nine faces and its significance:

  • First Goddess: The first day we worship Shailputri means daughter of Mountains. The universe arises from her energy. She represents invisible waves and energy of mountains.
  • Second Goddess: Second day we worship Brahmacharini. Brahma means infinity – the power which is everywhere in this universe. She is pure and feeling of untouched energy or power that we can feel but can’t see. She is like the sun rays every day, a fresh and new beginning.
  • Third Goddess: Third day we worship Chandraghanta. Chandra means moon, the symbol of beauty. She represents energy with beauty. In this world the reason behind every beautiful thing or human being or animals is the energy of Maa Chandraghanta.
  • Fourth Goddess: Fourth day we worship Kushmanda. She is the Prana energy – the reason behind every creation. For example – without energy/prana our body is dead and with it we are alive.
  • Fifth Goddess: Skandamata is the symbol of protection with the blend of compassion, affection and certain pride. She is the mother of all wisdom that includes – knowledge, art, discipline and science. She protects us from all problems and resides inside us as our consciousness.
  • Sixth Goddess: Maa Kathyayini is the sixth form of Maa Durga. Kathyayini means Seer of everything. Everything belongs to her and the energy beyond logic and imagination is Kathyayini.
  • Seventh Goddess: Kaal Ratri is the seventh form of mother divine. It means dark night that provides peace and rejuvenates energy in a new form. As we sleep at night our body takes rest and our body is infilled with an unseen energy that prepares us ready for the next morning, this energy is Kaal Ratri. She provide comfort with energy to every living things in universe
  • Eighth Goddess: The 8th day goddess is Maha Gauri who grants knowledge, growth, success and liberation. She promotes wisdom and helps us in living a happy life and do good karmas that lead us towards ‘Moksha’. She is the purity form of energy.
  • Ninth Goddess: The ninth form of Maa Durga is ‘Siddhiratri’. She is the judge of your lifetime court. She gives the fruits of your lifetime karma. She allows us to think big and put action beyond limitations. She provides strength to fulfil our desire.

But Navaratri is much more than a festival for farmers. After monsoon the harvesting started and for a prosperous crop they seek blessings from Maa Durga.

Guidance for Navaratri puja vidhi:

There are some vidhi vidhan to do puja during Navaratri to invite Maa Durga to our home. In fact according to God there is no vidhi vidhan for doing puja. According to them doing good karmas, behaving in manner and giving respect to parents and helping needy persons wholeheartedly are the real meaning of worshiping god. But as we are in society where vidhi vidhan of doing puja has been followed since ancient times, we also follow those footprints. These are some of the common and important steps for this puja:

  • Kalash Sthapana: On the first day a clay pot will be placed that is filled with water and keep mango leaves on the top of the kalash and a whole green coconut. It represents prosperity and divine energy.
  • Cleaning: Clean the area of doing puja properly. Make it with sprinkling Ganga jal.
    – Idol: Place idol of Goddess Durga.
    – Light a diya – it may be an ankhanda jyot or normal diya, it is up to you.
  • Offerings: Offer flowers, fruits, sweets and incense on a daily basis. It is believed that the nine forms of Divine Mother have different offerings according to their day.
  • Chanting: Read Durga Shaptashati or Durga Chalisa on a daily basis. You can also chant the Durga beej mantra – “Om Aim Hreem Kreem Chamudaye Vichche” and recite this mantra 108 times daily.
  • Fasting: Devotees do fasting for 9 days. They only have fruits and milk in their servings. Most of the people eat satwik food once in a day. This fasting is for deep cleansing of our soul and mind.
  • Evening Aarti: Do arti in the evening with clove and camphor to cleanse the environment. At this time the family gathers for prayers and sings traditional bhajan.
  • Kanya Pujan: The fast will end after offering prashad and gifts to nine young girls. These nine girls are as nine forms of Mother divine. And seek blessings from them.
