And this earthen pot is used by women in offering water to the moon in the evening ceremony. Somewhere it is believed that women used to pray for their husbands for their protection and wellbeing when they go for distant war, whereas in many places it is associated with the wheat sowing season which means the beginning of the Rabi crop cycle. It is the festival of North India in which women keep fasting the whole day for the long life of their husbands. It starts from sunrise to moonrise.

Her brothers’ can’t tolerate their sister’s distress and had planned to end her fast as soon as possible to reduce their sister’s discomfort.

The brothers have planned to create an illusion of moon rise so that their sister will finish her fast and have some food.

Veeravati was tricked into believing that the moon had risen and she broke her fast prematurely. And after ending her fast she gets the news that her husband is no more. She rushed to her husband’s palace and on the way she was encountered by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They both explain the truth and reveal the reason for her husband’s death. Goddess Parvati instructed Queen Veeravati to observe the fast of Karwa Chauth once again and she did it wholeheartedly. As a result her king got alive with the blessings of Maa Parvati.

Durga Ashtami: Victory of Good Over Evil and Its Spiritual Importance

Navaratri is an occasion that holds many significance in hindu mythology. In Navaratri each day is very important and auspicious. Navaratri is the celebration of 9 days and these 9 days belong to 9 forms of Maa Durga. It is believed that the power of Maa Durga is at its peak on Ashtami of Navratri. It is also known as Durga Ashtami and Maha Ashtami. It falls on Ashtami tithi of Ashwin month of Shukla paksh. Durga Ashtami emphasizes the feminine power, strength and divine transformation.

Ashtami represents strength and protection upon the world. In ancient times it is believed that there is some secret pattern of worshiping Maa Durga on Ashtami. If anyone worships Maa Durga wholeheartedly on this day will attain his/her desires very soon. It is said by our grandparents that on Durga Ashtami, Maa visits their devotee’s house to meet them. There is something in the atmosphere that day, something like magic.

As every festival has a story and there is also a bravery story behind Durga Ashtami. In Hindu mythology this is the story of a demon called Mahishasur. He impressed Lord Brahma by his devotion and Lord Brahma granted him a boon that he could not be killed by any man or god. Then he started misusing his power and started war with gods. But there was a flaw in the boon that he could be killed by a woman. But the demon was overconfident that a woman can’t kill him, he is more powerful than the god than how a woman can kill him.
Gods were totally helpless in front of Mahishasur, then they went to Lord Brahma and asked for the solution.
Lord Brahma has cleared to all god that in boon it is not mentioned that woman can’t kill him. After the suggestion of Lord Brahma, gods combined their energy and formed the fierce goddess Durga.

Maa Durga’s appearance was totally different. She is the combination of the energies of the whole universe. She held weapons in each hand, and loved to ride on lions. She is the symbol of unstoppable courage and feminine power.

Maa Durga’s power peaked on the eighth day of Navratri because she killed the army of demons that is why this day holds more significance and importance in Navratri. Significance of Pitru Paksh

As we all know if we lose the person whom we love a lot and it is very difficult to accept their death or to believe that the person is no more. Sometime after death also we feel their presence just because we are connected to them through the love and affection we still have for them. Our unconditional love for them doesn’t let them rest in peace. Yes, it is true. But it is not correct because due to it many people can face problems because they are not the element of this world now after death. They have to leave this world. Sometimes we have seen such cases where we observe paranormal activity.

Do you know? Why does this happen so?

Because rather they died before their destiny had planned or some mis-happenings were held with them or normal death. All of these souls didn’t achieve peace and they are in search of peace and unable to get detached from this world.  For them some rituals are done in Pitru Paksha that helps their soul to rest in peace.

What is Pitra Paksha?

The word Pitru means ancestors and Paksha means fortnight. It lies in the Bhadrapada months in Krishna paksha according to hindu calendar and it continues for 15 days before Navratri gets started. It comes in the month of September or October. According to Indian culture it is believed that the family members who are no more were still alive in some other world. And after descending from earth we perform these rituals that help them to rest in peace and get freedom from this world.

Have you ever lit a diya in memory of the loved one you had lost and while doing that had felt their presence around you? That moment is more than nostalgia. Remembering our ancestors is not only a tradition of India but it is a love and gratitude for them. It shows our spiritual connection with them. And the duration of Pitru Paksha is more powerful for such types of rituals. Offering food, charity on their behalf and many other ways at this time is believed to reach the ancestors directly to reach prosperity in their afterlife. These offerings are known as “Pind Daan” and it is done by the eldest son of the family. This pind daan satisfied their soul and they always kept their blessings in their family. And these pind daan is not only done in this period, in fact people used to offer food to their ancestors on every Amavasya according to hindu calendar.

In our home it is said by our grandparents that the pind daan during pitru paksh acts as a food for the ancestors for the whole year.

There are many stories related to our ancestors, it is believed since ancient times. One of the stories is related to “Mahabharata”. As we all know ‘Karna’ the son of Kunti (mother of panch pandavas) and Karna is gifted by Lord Sun for her devotion to him. It is said that after death Karna is sent to Swarga. He is offered gold and gemstone to eat instead of food. Karna was in doubt why they are offering these items as food. He went to Lord Indra and asked the reason for all of the incident. Indra dev answered that before death he had donated gold stones to needy persons but never offered food to his ancestors. So how he could be offered food. It is true that karma returns what we will do in our lifetime; everything will come back to us in the same way.  Karna realised his mistakes and requested Indra dev to send him back to the earth for 15 days to perform the ritual of shradha. These 15 days are known as “Pitru Paksha”. It shows the importance of offering food to the departed soul.

There are some key rituals that are followed during

Pitru paksha that are passed from generation to generation and these rituals are symbolic expression of gratitude and responsibilities toward our ancestors:

  • Shradha: This is the basic rituals followed by family members by offering foods which include kheer, lentils, puri, vegetables to Brahmins and cows. Sradha is performed on tithi on which the ancestors leave this world.
  • Tarpan: Tarpan means Kusha grass tying in finger to offer water mixed with barley and sesame seeds while chanting mantras by Pandit ji. It is mostly done by river banks or sacred water bodies because it is believed that it quenches the thirst of the ancestors.
  • Pind Daan: In this cooked barley and rice balls known as pindas are offered to ancestors. This pind daan help ancestors to be detached from this world and help their soul to rest in peace.
  • Daan: This is a powerful ritual. Anna Daan is considered a very powerful spiritual act.
  • Feeding the needy persons: Nowadays families use to donate food in NGOs to provide meals to the underprivileged with feelings of love.

These are some of the rituals that are performed during this period. As our country is a home of different religions. There are different rules and ways of performing these rituals for the ancestors.

Navratri

As we all know India is a country of different religions, cultures and festivals. And we have celebrated each and every festival with great joy since ancient times. There are many significance and history behind every festival. Navaratri is one of them. It comes after Pitru Paksha when Shukla paksha starts. According to hindu mythology, Maa Durga fought with demon Mahishashur for nine days and defeated him on the 10th day. This festival is devoted to Goddess Durga for nine days and celebrates the victory over the demon by Maa Durga as Vijayadashami or Dusshera. Navaratri will be celebrated from Mon, 22 Sep, 2025– Thus, 2 Oct, 2025.

Guidance for Navaratri puja vidhi:

There are some vidhi vidhan to do puja during Navaratri to invite Maa Durga to our home. In fact according to God there is no vidhi vidhan for doing puja. According to them doing good karmas, behaving in manner and giving respect to parents and helping needy persons wholeheartedly are the real meaning of worshiping god. But as we are in society where vidhi vidhan of doing puja has been followed since ancient times, we also follow those footprints. These are some of the common and important steps for this puja:

  • Kalash Sthapana: On the first day a clay pot will be placed that is filled with water and keep mango leaves on the top of the kalash and a whole green coconut. It represents prosperity and divine energy.
  • Cleaning: Clean the area of doing puja properly. Make it with sprinkling Ganga jal.
    – Idol: Place idol of Goddess Durga.
    – Light a diya – it may be an ankhanda jyot or normal diya, it is up to you.
  • Offerings: Offer flowers, fruits, sweets and incense on a daily basis. It is believed that the nine forms of Divine Mother have different offerings according to their day.
  • Chanting: Read Durga Shaptashati or Durga Chalisa on a daily basis. You can also chant the Durga beej mantra – “Om Aim Hreem Kreem Chamudaye Vichche” and recite this mantra 108 times daily.
  • Fasting: Devotees do fasting for 9 days. They only have fruits and milk in their servings. Most of the people eat satwik food once in a day. This fasting is for deep cleansing of our soul and mind.
  • Evening Aarti: Do arti in the evening with clove and camphor to cleanse the environment. At this time the family gathers for prayers and sings traditional bhajan.
